Favorite Finds – Hooked on Phonics
Monday, July 20th, 2009When we were in 2nd grade, we had a teacher named Mrs. Powers. She was by no means our favorite teacher, but she did teach us some of what we consider to be the more important life skills and for that she is well-remembered. The first of these skills was handwriting. That’s right, folks. We were writing cursive in 2nd grade. We know teenagers who think cursive is just another font type. So sad. Anyway, that skill has served us well over the years. For example, it was especially handy when coming up with the shop’s identity. We think of Mrs. Powers everytime someone says “nice logo!” (Yup, that’s our very own script up there!)

We also did a lot of phonics in 2nd grade. Which naturally led to some awesome reading and spelling skills. Skills that we have used most recently in re-reading the entire Twilight Saga and in writing this post without the help of spell check. Thank you Mrs. Powers. Thank you Mrs. Powers. We LOVED phonics. One might say we were even hooked on it. We loved all those fun worksheets with the pictures and things to fill in. So it should come as no surprise that when we saw these old phonics cards we knew we had to get them for our very own. What do you do with old classroom phonics cards once you’re an adult and nowhere near a class full of 2nd graders? We sure as heck don’t know. But we’re sure someone out there has some ideas. If you do, these ones will be for sale soon in our online shop. Get ‘em while they’re hot, snot, cot, trot, robot.
